Neurotherapy
Center of Washington
Mary Lee Esty, Ph.D., LCSW
Mary Lee Esty, Ph.D., is the president of the Neurotherapy Center of Washington. Dr. Esty is a social worker with a doctorate in health psychology.
Her specialty is using biofeedback and complementary/alternative
practices to help people overcome problems associated with chronic and
life-threatening illnesses. Dr. Esty is a recognized Fellow in both EEG and Biofeedback with the Biofeedback Certification Institute
of America and is a member
of the Academy of Certified Social Workers.
Dr. Esty is a co-principal investigator
on a recently published study on the effect of FNS upon Mild/Moderate
Traumatic Brain Injury. (See: The Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation,
Vol. 16, # 3, June 2001.) Dr. Nancy Schoenberger and Dr. Samuel
Shiflett of The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, West Orange,
NJ, were co-investigators. Dr. Len Ochs was a consultant to
the study. This study was funded by an NIH block grant. A second
study, double-blind and placebo-controlled, on the effects of
EEG biofeedback on symptoms of fibromyalgia was undertaken with
Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Data
are being processed.
Dr. Mary Lee Esty, President of NCW, has been doing neurofeedback for over 12 years and has treated more than 1,300 patients in that
time using EEG neurotherapy. After being asked to accept an NIH block grant for studying the effect of
EEG neurofeedback, she has become a specialist in that application.
Emily R. Perlman, MS, CTRS
Emily Perlman is a clinician at the Neurotherapy Center of Washington. She
received her MS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She began
her 22-year career in mental health doing stress management in Walter Reed Army Medical Center
and at George Washington University. She incorporated biofeedback into her practice
9 years ago and has since expanded her areas of expertise to include sEMG, HRV
biofeedback, and EEG neurofeedback for pain management, all of which are effective for patients with
fibromyalgia and other chronic pain disorders. Ms. Perlman is BCIA certified.
Ms. Perlman is also an experienced practitioner of EEG neurotherapy and was a principal therapist in the NCW and Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center firbomyalgia study using EEG neurotherapy. (In press SNR Journal)
Diane Badger, BS
Diane Badger is both a clinician and the office manager at the Neurotherapy Center of Washington. Diane
holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Moorhead State University in Computer Information Systems and is currently working
on her MS in Mental Health Counseling. Diane came to NCW as the parent of a child with brain injury. After
witnessing first hand just how powerful neurotherapy treatment is, Diane decided to change careers to focus on
making EEG Neurofeedback and Brainwave Training available to more people.
In addition to training with EEG Neurofeedback, Diane is also trained in the Othmer's approach to
Brainwave Training and is working on her BCIA certification. Future plans are to open an NCW satellite office in the Frederick/Washington County area.
Judy Free, LCSW-C
The newest addition to our Neurotherapy Center of Washington group is Judy Free whose expertise in EMDR and EFT for
anxiety and stress adds another dimension to our services.
Judy is an experienced psychotherapist and also brings a keen interest in alternative medicine practice. She was trained in
Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR), an elegant therapy most notable for the possibility of a rapid release of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. She is also trained in multiple forms of alternative energy therapies including Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and is now expanding her skills with Neurofeedback.
Her multimodal approach to healing has brought her to the Neurotherapy Center to learn yet another way to help people achieve
and maintain healthy bodies and minds. Judy is a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical in Maryland, a Licensed Clinical
Social Worker in Montana (inactive) and a Board Certified Diplomate in Social Work.
